Bad Breath Ask The Periodontist Marie Schweinebraten Question:
I have a severe bad breath. Therabreath and other mouthwashes do not cure my bad breath.

I spend hours reading and buying product online about bad breath but nothing works. I believe that I inherited my bad breath from my parents. Both of my parents have bad breath.

I am now 39 years old and I want to take a drastic action regarding my stinky mouth. Due to my mouth so stinky I have no friends, no job and no social life. I am a loner, so to speak.

I am crying right now writing this email because I am so sick of my bad breath. I asked God to do a miracle for me and have my bad breath go away. I remember growing up having cavities. I had all my cavities removed and yet my breath still stinks. ...Visitor from LA

Answer:
Just rinsing with a mouthwash will not cure your bad breath.

You must find out what is causing it so that it can be treated and permanently eliminated. The most common cause is gum infection.

The first step is to make an appointment with a specialist who can determine if you have any gum infection. This person is a periodontist, so find one in your area and go for an examination. They can get started on treatment that will begin to make you feel better.

Other less likely causes of bad breath are cavities, sinus problems or stomach problems, but the periodontist can get you to other doctors who can treat these if that is the cause.

Bad breath can be treated. Taking care of your mouth is the most important thing you can do to get started. It is frustrating, but in a short period of time you can feel much better and not be embarrassed.

Don't give up. You could be a new person with treatment and it may be something that is simple and inexpensive to treat or can be done in steps that help you feel better.
