Question:
Cerec vs gold Restoration - Prep trauma: I want to prevent a possible root canal need after getting a crown on a tooth that is already cold sensitive.
Which tooth preparation is less traumatic to a tooth or which restoration (Cerec or Gold) requires less tooth material to be taken off preserving more of the tooth material?
Are any laser systems available yet that can prepare a tooth for a crown? ... Visitor from British Columbia Canada
Answer:
I understand your desire to be as conservative as possible when it comes to removing tooth structure. The tooth structure you have is all that you will ever have. We do not grow back tooth structure.
The choice between any porcelain material or gold is always a concern to me. The fact is that less room is required to have gold replace the missing tooth and stand up under the pressure that the tooth will undergo than for porcelain.
Today, more and more patients want the tooth to "look" natural. And the only way to do that is to have some porcelain material applied to the gold crown, which requires at least 2mm of clearance.
Which material is best for your circumstance? That is a judgement call and a choice for you and your dentist to make.
As far as the laser is concerned... Yes, it is possible to use any of the Erbium lasers today to do a crown or any type of preparation. The question is really... Is that the best instrument to use? That also "depends"...
In our office, we use lasers on almost every tooth we prepare today for any restoration. We use them where they are the most helpful in the preparation process. To do what they do best.... we also use high speed hand pieces as well to do what I need the high speed hand piece to do.
So.... In my hands, adequate tooth preparation (for a crown) requires both instruments.
