Question:
My dentist told me that there was decay on one of my porcelain crowns.

Is that possible? Does the actual crown decay? ... Visitor from OH

Answer:
Porcelain material does not decay.

Your dentist was likely referring to the margin area of the tooth or an accumulation of decay between the crown and underlying tooth structure, which is not a good sign.

Decay of a crowned tooth is a manifestation of leakage. Bacteria is migrating into the cementation area at begins to compromise the underlying tooth structure... which can be rapid in some instances since most of the protective enamel has been removed.

Crown failure usually follows.
