Question:
Pain after new crown: Long Story Short - I had a crown put on about 5 months ago, left side molar second from back.
I told the dentist that the temporary crown bothered me and he adjusted. When time to put on permenant crown, he placed with temp cement for 2 weeks. I had problems with bite the entire time and he adjusted it 2 more times.
Then he went ahead and put a crown on with permanent cement. I have been back at least 5 times over 4 months for adjustments. The last visit he started adjusting all the molars on the left side. He says that the crown did not cause this.
Now my bite is all messed up and a 2nd dentist says that orthodontics maybe my only savior. Is there anything else that I should do before 18 months of ortho? ...Visitor from GA
Answer:
It sounds like all your present occlusion problems started with that one crown (unless you had problems before the crown was put in).
If everything felt normal prior to the new crown, only the new crown should have been adjusted.
Were I to treat your present problem the following protocol would be followed:
First an occlusal stint would be fabricated. You would wear it 24 hr per day. Eat and sleep with it. It would be taken out only for four minutes morning and evening to brush your teeth. When it is out do NOT bite your teeth together. See the dentist once a week to adjust the stint.
After six weeks with stint in, your jaw muscles, TMJ, and occlusion with stint should have reached balance. Now the dentist will remove the stint and have you bite your teeth together, noting prematurities with bite paper. Slight occlusal adjustments will be made to allow for comfortable occlusion wiithout the stint.
The dentist will again try the stint in to make sure you have your bearings. Now the dentist will look at your bite to see if your teeth were destroyed by the previous dentist occlusal grinding. I expect slight adjustment will place you in a comfort zxone. Probably adjustment of the new crown will be necessary.
If the crown is destroyed, a refund to you is in order. Unfortunately, I have no fool proof method to help you find a competent dentist, and that inability includes choosing an orthodontist. Good luck.
