Question:
Can't eat with new temporary: I had a temp crown put on 3 days ago.

I am unable to eat, I keep biting my cheek where they put this temp. I can not eat without placing my finger in my mouth and keeping my cheek away from this tooth they preped.

I have called the dentist office repeatedly and I am told that its just going to have to take time for my bite to change. Is this normal?

By the way, the temp is protruding out over my gum line. Im pretty sure its not seated correctly. ...Visitor from TX

Answer:
I am sorry to hear of your problems with the temporary crown.

I have been answering questions from dental patients for a long time, and this is the first time I must tell you that this is not really a dental question, but one of how patients should be treated as people.

I would suggest that you tell your dentist that he needs to see your problem. If he does not want to see you, I would suggest that you see another dentist soon.

The temporary crown is meant to mimic your original tooth and hold your bite in place so that the permanent crown fits your mouth as it was when the impression was taken to make the crown.

If the temporary is not biting correctly, it is very likely that the permanent crown will not fit properly.

My real concern is that it sounds like your dentist is not really interested in your comfort and may not be serious about the quality of the permanent crown. I would not let this person make my crown.
