Crowns Ask The Dentist Corinne Scalzitti

Question:
Root Canals and Cap: I need a root canal and crown for my right upper bicuspid.

I have some concerns about the type of crown. I have read that gold crowns are the most durable.

The dentist I saw uses CEREC and another dentist in the area uses CAPTEK.

My questions:

1. I am very confused on which might be the best type for me.
2. A silly question - gold crowns - do they get stained to be natural color of your teeth?
3. Do dentists still do the all gold crowns (I can't seem to find anyone)?
4. Which type is most commonly used and recommended?

Answer:
Cerec or Captek would be fine for a crown. Cerek is an in-office system for milling the crown the same day it is prepared. In the right hands, it can be good. In my practice I prefer using a laboratory to make my crowns.

Captek is gold with porcelain covering it. It is pretty because the gold that shines through gives it a warm look. Captek is also supposed to lower the bacterial count of the sulcus or pocket of the tooth it is on.

I used Captek for several years, and use it now in some circumstances. The reason I stopped using it was that many of the crowns had porcelain fractures a year or so after I placed them. I still do them (did one yesterday), but not as my first choice unless I need more retention from having metal under the crown.

Most dentists will do all gold crowns. I would not suggest one of these for an upper bicuspid because it isn't pretty.

My choice would be Procera Zirconia or Lava. These are all white crowns, very prettty, very strong, and beautiful. They have no metal.

I don't understand the question about gold crowns and staining. Gold crowns are gold. They can be covered with porcelain as in Captek to match your teeth. Porcelain crowns will not stain or change color as teeth do.

Hope this helps you.
