Question:
Permanent line on upper lip: I had implants about 2 yers ago (upper) and my prosthodontist made a snap-in denture with a Hadar bar.
When he put it in, I lost my upper lip. He said he could fix it by removing some of the pink gum acrylic. So naturally I said o.k. It's taken 2 years but I now have a permanent 2 inch line under my nose it goes from side to side. It looks like I have 2 smiles.
I've contacted him he said it was my fault because I told him to cut the gum material down. I've been to another prosthodontist, he doesn't know what to do.
I've been back to my implant surgeon, he doesn't know what to do. This whole procedure cost me about $25,000. I don't have money for another one. Is there anything that can be done? ... Visitor from MA
Answer:
What makes an upper denture look natural is 2 things. The teeth (size, shape color and position) and the flange of acrylic that fits up under your nose.
If one of those two things is off, this can make you look like your upper lips rolls under and disappears. It really shouldn't have anything to do with the implant component.
Your dentist should be able to place wax onto the front of the existing denture and mimic a different position for the teeth or a thicker flange. Once you have a look you like, the flange is reprocessed or the teeth are moved and reprocessed. It's not really a big deal.
It happens all the time. People often don't speak up when we try in dentures and it's only after we deliver the denture and they wear it a while do they decide they either like it or not.
I'm redoing one right now that I thought was beautiful but the patient didn't like it. Good luck but I feel like this is a problem that should be easily corrected for not a lot of money.
