Question:
Ameliogenesis Imperfecta I have ameliogenesis imperfecta and last year had 10 porcelain
veneers put on my top teeth. They are a beautiful shape, but the colour is gross.
The doctor said that the veneers are a window to the teeth....but if the teeth underneath are yellow then why accent that with the veneers?
I am going back this month to get 4 top ones which cracked replaced and my bottom 6 teeth done, but I don't want them done unless they will be white. He says they used the whiteness everything ....but can't you bleach the teeth underneath first?
I can't live with this colour, in the age of white teeth! What can I do? ...Visitor from Ontario Canada
Answer:
First let me say that if you have amelogenesis imperfecta, which is a genetic defect that results in no enamel or poor enamel formation, I don't think veneers would be the best option.
Since you are getting lower veneers as well, I would be concerned that the weak enamel that may still be present on the back of your upper teeth would wear too excessively.
You would be better off with full coverage of your upper teeth with an all ceramic crown, As for your color issue. Veneers can be made to totally block out underlying color.
It does not appear that your dentist instructed the lab about the underlying color and how much blockout (opacious porcelain) to use. I would get a second opinion from a different dentist before doing those lower veneers.
