Question:
Jaw Cracking: When I was 14 years old I began a habit of cracking my jaw alot. Then, 2 years later I noticed my right jaw seemed to move out of place making my face look crooked.

But it wasn't too noticeable... only looking at it from a 45 degree angle in the mirror. And a year ago I think my left jaw seemed to come out of place too.

Now I am 19 years old and I still crack my jaws. Sometimes I crack it loud and it moves around, I just can't stop it.

Now I am wondering if it can cause your cheekbone / zygomatic arch to expand or grow because I noticed that my face is alot wider than it was a few years back.

Please help me. I have never seen a doctor about it because it does hurt or cause pain. ... Visitor from FL

Answer:
It appears you may have damaged your tmj joints. The tissues within the tmj joint are NOT regenerative which probably accounts for the increase in symptoms.

Consult a tmj or neuromuscular dentist in an effort to prevent further damage.

In situations where tmj joint dysfunction is extreme, you may need to consult with an Oral Surgeon for treatment options.

NOW is the time to become proactive. Your habit of not investigating possible treatment needs will likely make things worse.

Review the videos we have in the Neuromuscular Section of our video library to get an idea of the technologies that are used by dentists who routinely diagnose and treat tmj abnormalities.
