Question:
Do missing canines need to be fixed? I am 26 years old and have known I am missing my upper canines since I was very small.
I recently had an occlusal adjustment to fix my bite. My new dentist is telling me that that is not enough and I need to get a crown or other material to create "canines" so that I do not grind my teeth down so far they are useless.
I don't know if drastic action is necessary since I have never been told this before. I know congenital missing canines are very common and am wondering if they always need to be fixed? ... Visitor from FL
Answer:
It would be difficult to give you a comprehensive answer without clinically examining you.
However, that being said, having a well balanced and protected bite is important to prevent other issues from occurring, i.e. TMJ. A poor bite relationship can lead to TMD (TMJ), abnormal occlusal wear and periodontal issues.
I am assuming you have your deciduous canines present and your dentist wants to place crowns on them. That is not unreasonable as long as there is sufficient root structure present.
How long it will hold up is another question. Perhaps if there is no impacted canine, you could consider implants
