Question:
I had my wisdom teeth (all 4) last month. One was difficult to remove and the surgeon had to dig into the bone to remove it.
Two weeks later, I was admitted to the hospital for surgery due to a VERY painful abscess. Three days after that I was released and then put on Keflex. Still on the meds now. I have been unable to really open my mouth for about 3 weeks now...even though I have been doing the exercises.
I can still only eat soft foods. I can barely get a utensil in my mouth! I have lost 12 lbs. Also, and I'll try to explain this the best I can...but when I do eat...the first bite or two, it's like my salivary glands go crazy and I have this intense paralyzing pain that radiates up to my ears. ...Visitor from NC
Answer:
It sounds like your tmj joints have been affected, which could be caused by the trauma of surgery and having your jaws extended and retracted for a long time.
Since all 4 molars have been removed, the tmj symptoms may stem from the change in your bite.
It will may take several more days for all of the trauma related symptoms to abate. If you still
have tmj dysfunction symptoms, get a consult or two from dentists who have "documented experience"
in doing occlusal rehabilitation. Be sure to ask for pictures of similar treatment.
