About Wisdom Teeth Ask Dentists James Sanderson Question:
I have a lower wisdom tooth that is impacted and needs to come out. That I am sure of but my dentist says that one above it needs to come out as well because it will eventually drop since it will have no support once the lower tooth is gone.

I have a few questions regarding this.
1. How likely is the upper tooth to drop?
2. How soon after the lower tooth is removed?
3. What problems can I expect if I choose not to have the upper tooth removed?
4. Is there ever a reason not to have the upper tooth removed if there are no other problems with it?

Having one removed is more than I care to go through. ...Visitor from OH

Answer:
I understand your desire to keep every tooth that you possibly can.

Please understand that it is real difficult to really be specific in this situation effectively by remote control.

However I can tell you what I think your dentist is talking about.

Many times these teeth are very difficult to clean and that is a part of the reason that we talk about removing them because it makes it easier to clean the teeth ahead that are more important to you in the long run.

Also if the tooth begins to drop down and that can cause an interferance with the way that your jaw slides and moves in harmony with the top teeth. That can cause TM Joint problems.

These are 2 reasons and there can be others. Like the older you get the tougher it is on you to have these teeth removed.

My advice is to have both removed at the same tiime. You will not be any more sore and it will be over.... By the way... why not ask about the other side as well. That is really what I would want done if I were you, especially if you were being put to sleep to have it done.
