Question:
Wisdom tooth extraction with residual root: My daughter had her lower wisdom tooth out but the dentist left part of the root in. She has had an infection.
Once this clears up can the piece of tooth just stay there or does it have to be removed? I know there are complications regarding the nerves. My daughter is very worried and upset over this. ...Visitor from London England UK
Answer:
It is not uncommon for parts of roots to be left behind when extracting, and this is especially the case with the lower wisdom teeth.
This is due to curved or brittle roots. Generally chasing a piece of root causes great distruction of the supporting bone, and can damage the nerve under the tooth. In majority of cases, there is no problem when the roots are left behind.
Once the area has healed, there should not be any problem. In some instances, the roots work their way to the surface, and can be easily removed.
The infection that generally results following an extraction is called dry socket, and can be very painful, but should heal uneventfully. Should you experience any discomfort in the future, contact your dentist.
